Founded in 1803 by the Scioto Company, Worthington is a community rich in history. James Kilbourne, leader of the Scioto Company, was later elected a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. The city name was chosen to honor former Governor of Ohio Thomas Worthington. Today you can still find these men honored with the names of two of the local high schools; Thomas Worthington and Worthington-Kilbourne. In 1931 another major historic mark was made when the Pontifical College Josephinum was built, standing as the only Roman Catholic pontifical college outside of Italy.
